Pentagon Pulls Back 700 U.S. Marines from Los Angeles
"With stability returning to Los Angeles, the Secretary has directed the redeployment of the 700 Marines whose presence sent a clear message: lawlessness will not be tolerated," Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told media.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass hailed the announcement as a significant victory for the city.
"This was an unnecessary deployment," she stated in a social media video. "This is a victory. We have many more victories to go because we need all of these raids to end."
Just hours before the Marine pullout was made public, Bass addressed attendees at Los Angeles Mission College, renewing her demand for the removal of military forces—including the Marines and National Guard—from the nation’s second-largest city.
"We need the National Guard to assist us in preparing for fire season, not for an inappropriate deployment where they are just guarding a building that's not under attack," she emphasized.
President Donald Trump initially ordered California National Guard troops into Los Angeles on June 7 amid anti-ICE protests, later supplementing their presence with 700 Marines. The Department of Defense began scaling back the National Guard's deployment last week.
